Carly’s Story

The following is a testimonial from one of our most dedicated clients. She consistently gives us her best and as a result has changed her life!!

I can honestly say that since I started training with John Machin at Machin-es my life has changed massively. Some of the changes have been hard and challenging but all of them have been positive.

Approximately 9 years ago I was at my heaviest. I lost a couple of stone back then, but plateaued for years despite regularly going to the gym, and chose to ignore this. Then 2 ½ years ago, following a trip to the Doctors I decided it was time to get real – I changed my diet and my training in the gym, and things began to improve and I lost a little weight, but then I got bored and frustrated with spending every night on my own in the gym, for what seemed little reward.

I started training with John 2 years ago now, attending the Sunday Metafit Class, at the suggestion of a friend who trained with him. I am not over-exaggerating when I say that deciding to go was quite possibly one of the best decisions I ever made. Within 6 months I was also attending Bootcamp on a Saturday and Corrective exercise, and  I now attend all Machin-es Group PT classes and Running Club, meaning I train 6 days a week.

All the training I do is Group based, but John still tailors the class to the individual, ensuring that you are continually challenged and always progressing.  He does this by very quickly understanding his clients, and how they will best be motivated. He doesn’t shout, or make you feel like what you have done isn’t good enough. He teaches you how to push yourself, and as long as you are doing your very best that is all that is asked. That doesn’t mean he won’t push you if you need it….:) .

At the same time, John gives you lots of information about what you are doing, why you are doing and what it will achieve. This has been really important for me in maintaining focus.  He is technical, and good technique is a priority for him. This, in my opinion, is the best way to learn how to exercise as it keeps injuries to a minimum and gets you maximum results.  John’s depth and breadth of knowledge is unparalleled. In addition to training, he has given me advice on nutrition and my diet has changed massively.  I understand how I should eat for my body type, and consequently why I wasn’t getting results before. He has also managed me and my training though periods of injury –  specifically Sciatica, and more recently an ankle injury, because he has the knowledge that will allow you to continue to train safely whilst rehabilitating and looking after your injury.

John is a motivated, focused, professional and approachable trainer. He really wants his clients to do well, and is always really proud when clients achieve their goals, which is encouraging in itself.

The other thing to say about Group PT classes at Machin-es is that on all the classes the group I train with are a group of genuinely lovely people, who always offer support and encouragement, have helped me stay focused and who I am now pleased to call friends.

I started training with John 2 years ago, unconfident and desperate to finally get my weight under control after literally years of struggling with it. I had reached the limit of my knowledge as far as my training went. Today, I am 6.5 stone lighter, 4 sizes smaller than I was then, I eat right, and most importantly I am fitter, stronger, happier and more confident, with new friends in my life and a real understanding of what I need to do to maintain my results so far and progress further…I am literally half the person (9.5 stone lighter) that I was 9 years ago, have run my first 10K and am about to do Tough Mudder.. I got into fitness to look better, but it has become so much than that.

Thank you so so much for everything you have helped me to achieve so far!! I cannot recommend John Machin or Machin-es highly enough. It’s been life changing for me!
